Centre of Competence for solid carbide tools: MILLER
1991–2025
MILLER GmbH & Co KG, Präzisionswerkzeuge, has been a pioneer in the mechanical manufacture of solid carbide tools since 1991. Acquired by MAPAL in 2003, the Allgäu-based company ideally complements MAPAL's product range and today operates a state-of-the-art production facility for solid carbide tools for drilling and milling.
AS IF MADE FOR EACH OTHER
MILLER Präzisionswerkzeuge was founded in 1991 in Altenstadt in the Illertal valley. Initially, the company consisted solely of the eponymous Helmut Miller, his wife and four employees. The founder had many years of experience in the industry with solid carbide tools. With a great deal of enthusiasm and energy, he set about realising his vision atproducing these tools on modern CNC machines and therefore quickly, flexibly and at attractive prices. This also means that his ultra-modern machines run in three-shift operation all year round. With success: two years after the start, MILLER employs 20 people, who mainly produce drills, but also milling cutters, countersinks and reamers. And Helmut Miller succeeds in acquiring major customers such as BMW, ZF Friedrichshafen and Bosch. As a result, the company was able to move into a modern new building with expanded machinery in 1998.
The Miller couple have no children and Helmut Miller was already 49 years old when he founded his company - the same age, incidentally, as Dr Georg Kress when MAPAL was founded in 1950. Helmut Miller wants to lead his company into a secure future - and MAPAL wants to expand its product range to include complete solutions. The MILLER tools for full drilling operations fit perfectly into this concept. After the two companies had already been in close contact as part of a tool management project, MAPAL took over the Illertal specialist in 2003, with MILLER Präzisionswerkzeuge remaining independent and Helmut Miller remaining Managing Director until 2008.
In the same year, a new production hall with logistics centre goes into operation in Altenstadt. The production area is doubled, making MILLER one of the world's largest and most modern factories for solid carbide tools. Within the MAPAL Group, the competence centre for solid carbide tools now employs almost 400 people, including more than 24 trainees.
